How I Did It...
I started my freelancing career as a web designer in 2012 while working as a technical support in a BPO company.
At first, it was just a side hustle charging $5 per hour on Upwork.com (formerly Odesk.com) until I accumulated $500 earnings in the first couple of months.
After cashing out my second $500 earnings from Upwork, I decided to take a 30-day leave of absence to test the waters and see if I could make as much as my job salary by working as a full-time freelancer from home.
Within 30 days, I was able to double my income charging between $10 and $15 per hour. Wow, I was impressed!
So, I decided to quit my corporate job immediately and go all in as a full-time freelance designer.
I thought it's going to be a smooth ride, but reality hit hard. The first few months were full of stress and anxiety.
It was feast and famine! Projects were not constantly coming in as I thought at the beginning.
I was struggling to get clients even if I lowered my rate. I wake up scared everyday not knowing when my next project to come and if I could sustain my income to feed my growing family and pay all my bills.
There were many times I contemplated to go back to my corporate job for financial security.
But instead, I kept pushing through…
Working hard as a slave day and night taking low-paying jobs on Upwork (some were even out of my scope) just to survive.
It was a dreadful experience!
Few weeks later, I was able to increase my rate to $30 per hour making between P30,000 and P60,000 income per month and sustain it for quite awhile.
Finally, I felt rich for the first time! Until, 2019...
I thought I was already earning pretty good until I’ve seen one community of freelancers on social media making ten times more than I was from doing the same amount of work or even less.
I felt like a loser! What was I missing for years of freelancing?!!
That’s when I learned about specialization and charging premium not based on the hours you work for clients but based on the value you can bring to their business through your design skills.

So, the first thing I did was stopped charging by hour and started charging a fixed premium fee.

I thought it’s just about picking a target niche, explaining the value of my service and saying my premium rate, BUT I was completely wrong!

That’s when I decided to change my strategy.
If I wanted to attract premium clients, my personal brand must look premium!
In other words, I need to have a High Perceived Value (HPV).
So, I started tweaking my profile, changed my offered service to Premium Design for High-Ticket Coaches, and created some sample designs to showcase.
A couple of weeks later...
Boom! I finally got my first Premium Client! $3,450 (P194,000+) for just a landing page design!
